THE RICHMOND JAZZ FESTIVAL 2014.
Virginia's fastest growing jazz event, the Richmond Jazz Festival (now in its fifth season and presented by Altria), was held this past weekend at the beautiful Maymont Victorian Country Estate. Music lovers from near and far came out to enjoy family, friends and great musical performances. This years festival featured three stages that offered a mixture of straight ahead traditional jazz artist, smooth jazz, R&B, as well as gospel music. Even with the threat of rain showers, jazz enthusiasts of all ages enjoyed the smooth sounds of artists such as the incomparable and "Sunshine" loving Roy Ayers; 11-time Grammy award winner Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds and the spiritual uplifting lyrics of Mary Mary.

The vast variety of music also included artist such as Cuban born Pedrito Martinez, who had us grooving in our seats. Many local groups such as Plunky & Oneness and Sharon Rae North showed off the homegrown talent of Richmond. Oh, did someone say that Peter White, Rick Braun and Euge Groove were performing on the "Virginia is for Lovers" stage? Yes, they were and perform they did!

Many took advantage of the opportunity to meet, get autographs and photos of the artist at the artist meet-and-greet tent. For the wine lovers, there was complementary wine tasting from Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, as well as dozens of food and merchandise vendors from around the region. The hosts even thought to provide shuttle services to conveniently shuttle you to and from the different stages and provided mobile charging stations to recharge your cell phones. I tell, you they thought of everything. Keeping in tune with the "Virginia is for Lover's" theme, was this year's "kissing cam" where you may have been put on the spot for a little public display of affection. This year even included a marriage proposal and she said yes.

There were over 35 unforgettable performances that left the crowds wanting more of their impeccable musicianship. Three awesome performances closed out this year's festival. For the more contemporary jazz lover there was the 2014 Grammy and NAACP award nominated artist Boney James, who always make you feel as though the party is just getting started. Also, Grammy award winning vocalist Dianne Reeves reminded us about this "Beautiful Life" which is the title cut from her recent release. Finally, the "Lowdown" voice like none I have ever heard, the one and only Boz Scaggs.
