Review for Jeff Golub’s “Train Keeps A Rolling” With Brian Auger

Record Label: eOne Music

Funky has a new name and it is Jeff Golub.  On his 12th time out, solo that is, Jeff has done it again and with help from jazz and rock keyboardist Brian Auger.  Jeff is arguably most known for his work with Rod Stewart with whom he spent 7 years with from the late 80’s to mid 90’s.

This is Jeff’s 12th album, but first since becoming blind and Jeff’s undaunted courage is nothing short of amazing.  This album is appropriately titled “Train Keep a Rolling” and so does he, along with his new dog and companion Luke, who can be seen standing by Jeff’s side on the album cover.  Jeff is no stranger to the blues as some of his heroes are blues musicians and the last two times out were bluesy for the legendary guitarist.

The new album was produced by Golub and Bud Harner who co-produced Jeff’s last 5 recordings.  Jeff’s latest project may have abandoned smooth momentarily, but jazz, soul and a few other musical languages are well represented here, with guest appearances by   saxophonist Mindi Abair, Auger on B-3 Hammond and Rhodes displaying his unequivocal romance with the instrument, several vocalists lending a hand with strong, raw and soulful sounds to add to the down home vibe of the album and many more offering their own flair. The album’s leader Jeff gives us a glimpse into his long lasting passionate affair with the electric guitar and why he is mentioned with the greats of any genre.

Highlights of the album are the “juke joint” blaring cover of Willie Dixon’s “I Love The Life I Live”, Curtis Mayfield’s street anthem “Pusherman”, to which Jeff gives it new life and modern funk.  Another track is the feel good, foot patting and hand clapping “J&B”, which calls for throwing caution to the wind and allowing Jeff and friends to send you to musical ecstasy.

Train Keeps A Rolling offers a variety of musicians, visiting funk, rock, soul and jazz.  Not only is it another work of art for the spirited artist, it is a testament to Golub’s endurance and unwillingness to abandon his life and craft during hard times.  Sounding just as awesome as ever, Jeff has not missed a beat and as it stands, nothing can keep this man from delivering his best.  Jeff Golub’s train definitely keeps a rolling.  If you claim to love music, this album will move and groove you until he does it again and undoubtedly, he will.
