Just spent the last couple of days listening to a CD by Grant Geissman called Bop! Bang! Boom! While I have not been a fan of the Jazz guitar since Wes Montgomery, I opened myself to the experience and I am pleased that I did so.
Geissman and fellow guitarist Larry Carlton are joined by pianist Russell Ferrante and Tom Scott on soprano sax. What they created is a CD that is surprising in the variety of flavors that will satisfy the tastes of many jazz lovers. From the boot-scootin‘ style of “Texas Shuffle“ to the sultry, Spanish style of “Un Poco Espanol“ and “Samba En Menor“, Geissman and his crew deliver an enjoyable listening experience. I also liked the saucy, zydeco beat of "$25 Stella" which featured Doug Lacey and Van Dyke Parks, and “Go To The Window” which had a little East Indian sitar sound to it. Geisssman shows his true mastery of his guitar on that tune in particular. Ferrante’s piano solos are 100% on point, beautifully done and mesmerizing. And since I am partial to the Sax, I was blown away by Tom Scott! Recommend it? Yes!!
This CD has something for everybody! Guaranteed!
(Also on the CD are Albert Lee, Brian Scanlon, Emilio Palame, Tom Ranier, Jim Cox, Corey Allen, Greg Mathieson, Trey Henry, Kevin Axt, Lelan Sklar, Ray Brinker, Alex Acuna, Brian Kilgore, Dennis Brown, and Chuck Lorre.)
