Review By: Andrew Reeves
Christian McBride’s “The Good Feeling” offers another exciting contribution to this artist’s impressive body of work. Released September 27th on Mack Avenue Records, the album includes original material and classic hits revamped exclusively for McBride’s big band project.
A bouquet of exceptional talent hand-picked for this record include Freddie Hendrix on trumpet, Michael Dease and Steve Davis on trombone and Xavier Davis on keys. The highlight of the album however, is the silky, sexy lyrics of vocalist Melissa Walker, headlining arrangements of popular favorites such as “When I Fall in Love” and “A Taste of Honey”. Christian McBride anchors this ensemble with the unique flavor he brings to bear as the project’s arranger and conductor. His legendary expertise on bass is a particularly delightful treat.
“The Good Feeling” is as energetic as it is playful, conjuring the whimsical ambience of the jazz clubs that predominated the early twentieth century. McBride’s hand-crafted sound not only guarantees his place among the living legends of modern jazz, but makes his latest album a tour de force of the highest caliber.
