CONCERT REVIEW: THE O'JAY'S

The O’Jays performed at Atlanta Symphony Hall in Atlanta, GA as part of The National Black Arts Festival's 2011 Legends Celebration.

By: Cheryl Armour

July 15,2011

The renowned group was at the forefront of soul music in the seventies and have enjoyed many years of success with 10 #1 hits, 10 gold and 9 platinum records to their credit.  The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005 in their home state of Ohio.  They have been nominated four times for a Grammy and won an American Music Award in 1990 for Best Group.  The O'Jays have been making music and performing for over fifty years and show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

In 2003, the O’Jays embarked upon acting careers appearing in “The Fighting Temptations” starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Beyonce Knowles.  Many other artists appeared in the film including Angie Stone, L’il Zane, Melba Moore and Montell Jordan.  The group sings in the movie and has several songs on the movie soundtrack, including “Rain Down,” “Love Me Like A Rock,” and “He Still Loves Me.”

As ticket holders mingled in the lobby before the show, SJM chatted with several of them about why they were excited to see The O’Jays perform.  Stanley Clemmons told us that he has been a longtime fan.  He has followed the group since the sixties, owns most of their cd’s, has attended several concerts over the years and enjoyed them all.  Not to mention they are living legends!

Once seated, the crowd was abuzz with anticipation as The O’Jays prepared to take the stage.  They performed many of their biggest R&B classic hits, including “Back Stabbers,” “Love Train,” “For the Love of Money,” “I Love Music” and “Use Ta Be My Girl” while throwing in some of the choreographed dance moves they’re known for.  Lead singer, Eddie Levert entertained the crowd with bits of humor inserting witty comments between songs eliciting chuckles and laughter from the audience.  Members of the crowd jumped to their feet throughout the performance as the band played soulful and funky hit after hit.  After concluding the show to a rousing standing ovation, they were asked to retake the stage where they were presented with an NBAF Legends award.  The O’Jays truly are living legends who still have the moves and clearly enjoy performing live.  They will be on tour for the remainder of the summer.
